Youth Finsights 2.0: Gaining Deeper Insights on Youth Financial Inclusion in Indonesia

Indonesia’s youth comprise nearly a quarter of the total national population. Today, youth have the longest productive period and are vital to shaping Indonesia’s future. The Indonesian government supports the financial and social inclusion of youth through several inclusive economic policies that target youth segments under the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (SNKI).

The latest effort by Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (Financial Services Authority, OJK) is Satu Rekening Satu Pelajar (one student, one account), launched in September 2022. The program hopes to increase financial literacy and knowledge among students by introducing financial products and services from early stages. It is imperative for OJK to have adequate information about youths’ financial requirements, behavior, and challenges to further its efforts and implement policies.

ADB, DIKA, and MSC Indonesia conducted the youth survey with consultation and guidance from SNKI and OKJ. The survey reached more than 2,182 young people aged 15-29 years across all major island groups. This report provides insights into youth financial behavior and highlights areas of focus to improve financial inclusion for youth and support the design of youth- centered financial products and strategies.
